CHALLENGE #3 - DANCE MAPPING - PART 3
Our Associate Artistic Director Jacobus Flynn has made a challenge for you which looks at the different spaces that make up our homes and builds up a dance map. In Part 3 you will develop your dance by adding travelling movements and make a map to perform them on. You will then use your dance to travel around your map.

OR FOLLOW THE WRITTEN TASKS HERE:
Task 1: find a move that travels
For each of your different room dances, choose one of the moves that you can use to travel.
You can travel this movement in any way you like, for example:
you might keep repeating a movement so that it moves you forward
you might choose a part of the body to lead the travel
you could walk holding a shape you make in the dance
You will use these travelling moves in the final part of this mapping challenge
Task 2: finding a pathway
Draw a route (journey/pathway) between the rooms on your map (showing how you get from one place to another). You could join up the rooms with big arrows.
Task 3: setting up your dance map
Find a new area, somewhere where you have some space to move about a bit. This space will be your “dance map” area, you are going to create a big version of your map in this space.
Now we are going to set up your dance map and bring together all the different places you’ve looked at around your home into this one place:
Stand in the middle of your dance map area and place your room pictures all around you
Look at the pathway/arrows you’ve just drawn on your room map in Task 2
Look at how these rooms in your home link together
Now move your room pictures around to make the same layout or pattern that you see in your room map - You can place your pictures on the floor, stick them up on a wall or a shelf or you could place them on a chair.
Wherever you place a picture will be the zone where you will dance the movements for that room
You can use coloured tape, paper or string to mark the pathways between your room pictures
You could also add in objects from other rooms to complete the map
Here is a video of how Jacobus set out his room pictures to create his dance map area:
And here are some images showing how Jacobus made pathways around his dance map using coloured tape:
Task 4: Dancing your map
Go to one of your pictures on your map. Dance the moves you made for that sign/room.
Using one of your travel moves, dance to the next room sign, traveling along your pathways and connecting routes.
Each time you arrive at a picture, dance that room dance and then travel on to another sign
Keep dancing around your map, until you’ve visited each sign and danced each room dance.
Task 5: Exploring your dance map further
Now play some music and dance your way around your map, finding different connections and interesting pathways. You can also add in any extra details you remember from around your home, for example:
You can extend your improvisation by adding moves inspired by memories, smells or sounds from the different areas
Remember the feeling of that room and add it into your dance
You could show someone else around your dance map and get them to join you in the dance
You could start at different places on your map and make a duet as you travel around your dance map together
Have fun improvising different pathways and seeing how different music changes the dance
Amazing! Now you’ve created a dance map of your home.
Challenge #3 Parts 1, 2 and 3 are now complete!
