CHALLENGE #2 - object AND DANCE - PART 1
Our Associate Artistic Director Bridget Chew has made a challenge for you which will get you looking at objects in your home in new ways - it’s a fun one! Enjoy!
LISTEN TO THE TASKS IN THIS AUDIO CLIP:
OR FOLLOW THE WRITTEN TASKS HERE:
Task 1: Stand in a room in your house and turn on the spot very slowly.
As you turn, take the time to look at all the objects in the room. Take the time to look at the different shapes and textures of these objects. Some objects maybe big like a bed or a sofa, some might be small like a pencil or a pair of glasses.
Maybe turn again and see if you see different or more objects or shapes which you missed the first time.
Task 2: Now have a look around your room carefully find 3 or 4 objects which you think have an interesting shape or texture i.e. spiky, soft, twisted, transparent. We recommend choosing small objects which you can place on a table. When challenge creator Bridget Chew did this task she chose a comb, an egg holder, a kitchen sieve and a ball of string.
Task 3: Once you have chosen your 4 objects place them together and look at them as a group so you can see if you are happy with your selection. If you have similar shapes maybe change them for another object in the house.
Task 4: Once you are happy with your selection look at the shape of one object and find a movement to represent it’s shape.
Then repeat task 4 to create a movement for each object.
Task 5: For each object find a whole-body movement and also a movement with an individual body part. These are Bridget’s two movements for the comb.
Task 6: Once you are happy with the different movements for your objects, choose some music and have fun putting your different movements together in the space. Remember you can make your movements fast/slow, big/small, changing direction and repeat.
Task 7: Look at the objects again and see if any of them have their own movement quality. For example: Bridget’s egg cup shakes gently - see video below! If any of your objects have their own movement quality see if you can copy it whilst doing your movements.
Task 8: Add this quality to your movement vocabulary to build into your dance and have fun improvising or you could create a dance sequence you would like to share with family and friends.
Brilliant Work! You now have a dance sequence you have created inspired by objects from your home!
